FIREMANS CHALLENGE FALL 2009
This past fall Epsilon Chapter held its seventh annual philanthropy, Pike Fireman’s Challenge, to help raise money for the local Blacksburg Fire Department. The philanthropy will help fund emergency response teams, fire safety education, the fire safety trailer, and specialty equipment. The philanthropy week consists of events that are designed to engage each of the participating sororities in the competition.
The week begins with an Introduction night, where all of the sororities come to our on-campus house to be briefed on the week’s events and the breakdown of the points that can be earned. The second night we hosted a concert in the backyard of the Pike house in which The Shack Band and one of our brothers, Shawn McDonough, performed. Tuesday consisted of a car wash at the local Advanced Auto Parts, where around 250 cars showed up to make a contribution. Thursday night we hosted an auction at the local Awful Arthurs. Each sorority dressed to theme and auctioned off one of their head coaches for a variety of points. The night was filled with hilarious performances put on by our brothers who were auctioned on stage. Friday was the last day to earn points for the competition through a bracket-style flag football tournament.
When all was said and done, a total of $12,750 was fundraised throughout the entire week. Zeta Tau Alpha was the competition winner for the second year in a row, winning by quite a close margin. Thank you to all of the sororities that participated and we look forward to your participation next year as we continue to help our local fire fighters.
