Community Involvement & Service
Community Service is incredibly important to the Pikes at Virginia Tech. Last semester alone, we logged over 3500 hours of community service as a brotherhood, with over 25 members with over 100 hours individually. Each year, Pike strives to be a leader on campus in number of hours logged by a fraternity, and on early Saturday mornings and every other day of the week, you'll find Pikes out there helping Blacksburg's citizens.
The Big Event, held each year in the spring semester, is the largest community service event in Southwest Virginia and over 2500 volunteers converge on Virginia Tech's drillfield to organize and get community service jobs. This year, Pike had over 85 brothers in attendence, by far the most out of any organization, Greek or otherwise, and helped the community in a myriad of ways from raking leaves for the elderly to painting fences for a disabled couple. As Dawn South, the Big Event Community Outreach Chair said...
"Pi Kappa Alpha had five brothers serve on my board, working closely with government, school, church, and community officials in order to obtain 256 community service projects for their brothers. These young men were very professional and dedicated...they were a vital asset to the Big Event."
"As a member of the executive committee for the Big Event, I deal with many campus organizations...in my three years with the Big Event, I have had nothing but positive interactions with Pike. They always came out strong to participate and truly represent Virginia Tech's motto, 'That I may serve' ."
